Calculate the neutralizing amine demand for a waterborne resin from its Acid Value and target degree of neutralization. Select a common volatile amine or enter a custom one.
Amine Demand at a Given Neutralization Target
AV in mg KOH/g | Amine Eq. Wt = Amine MW ÷ basicity (almost always 1 for these amines)
Neutralizing Amine
Amine Eq. Weight = —
Amine Required
Amine (phr)
Practical Note
This gives the theoretical amine demand for your target neutralization level — treat it as a starting point, then confirm final pH and viscosity by direct measurement, since real systems are sensitive to mixing order and amine volatility during addition. Volatile amines (ammonia especially) can flash off during storage or baking, shifting the resin back toward its un-neutralized state over time — this is a common cause of viscosity or stability drift in waterborne systems that isn't visible from the formulation numbers alone. Confirm the resin's actual Acid Value from the current lot before scaling a batch, since it can drift from the nominal datasheet value.
